FRESH from breaking Gateshead Thunder’s all-time appearance record, Robin Peers will run out on Thursday night for a well-deserved testimonial match.
The winger has been a Thunder stalwart for the past 13 seasons, and will celebrate with a game against a North East Select side expected to contain a handful of Thunder stars from yesteryear.
The match takes place at Percy Park RFC’s Preston Avenue ground in North Shields with an 8pm kick-off. Proceeds will go to Peers’ testimonial fund, with a suggested donation of £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.
The player said: “I am proud to have represented the club for so long, and to have been awarded a testimonial by the Rugby Football League is a great honour.
“With both my playing career and employment being based in the North East for the North East Rugby League community, I thought it would be fitting to play against a North East select side on the night.
“I would also like to thank head coach Kevin Neighbour for agreeing to allow Gateshead Thunder to play midweek, and to give a big thank you to Percy Park RFC for hosting the match.”
Following this season Peers will head over to America where he will take up a place in the USA Rugby League.
“I will be leaving both Thunder and the North East to pursue my coaching career, and when I leave Thunder I will be announcing my retirement as a player,” he said.
“I hope that I will be able to return in the future in a coaching capacity with Thunder. I hope that everyone will come down to the game on Thursday. It will be a chance for me to say farewell to everyone.”
