GATESHEAD Thunder slumped to a third consecutive defeat as visitors Workington Town earned a narrow four-point victory despite playing for more than an hour with 12 men.

Thunder made a dream start when they took the lead after only a minute when Shane Wooden eased past a weak Jason Mossop challenge.

On-loan Batley Bulldogs centre Mossop was then sent off for a 16th-minute trip on Nick Hyde to leave Workington shell-shocked. It was the Cumbrians who hit back with two consecutive tries in 10 minutes from Shaun Lunt and Neil Frazer along with a Carl Forber penalty.

The gap was then reduced to four points when, after an incident was put on report, full-back Neil Thorman hit a gap from Tim Martin’s pass.

A first half of 15 penalties had been poor fare for a crowd of 275 but there was no lack of incident after the break.

A struggling Thunder continued to fall off tackles but after Steve Ormesher increased Workington’s lead Michael Knowles grabbed the first of his two tries. Two Franco Kmet tries inside eight minutes, both from outside the Gateshead 20, further exposed the Tynesiders’ defensive frailties.

Darren King then powered over from close in after Ryan Clarke had knocked on and at 14.36 Workington looked home and dry.

The towering Cumbrians, however, were hanging on at the end as Thunder successfully attacked the fringes.

Second rower Wooden hit the line from 12 metres and then sub Tony Doherty put Knowles over in the corner.

On loan Castleford forward Knowles converted from out wide and then Thorman, who had a length of the field interception try disallowed, put Bradley over the whitewash.

It was too little too late from Gateshead who were unable to find another try in the five minutes left.
