Team Northumbria claimed a second win in three days as Irish eyes continue to smile on Netball Superleague’s surprise package.
Kate Carpenter’s side followed up a fantastic homecourt victory against Celtic Dragons with a nailbiting 52-50 triumph at Yorkshire Jets last night.
TN failed to win back-to-back fixtures throughout the 2013 campaign. Yet three games into the new season and the Sport Central club is setting the early pace in the race for a top-four finish.
Carpenter again chose an all-Irish attacking combination with in-form Noleen Lennon linking up with eventual player-of-the-match Oonagh McCullough.
But the sharp-shooting duo took their time to settle inside Hull’s Bonus Arena as the hosts opened up a 16-10 first quarter lead.
A combination of staunch defence, inspired by Australian import Georgia Beaton, and Lennon’s experience in front of goal sparked an 11-point swing as TN took a 28-23 lead into half-time.
The Jets fought back but Carpenter’s side held their nerve with a McCullough goal less than six minutes from time sparking the run to victory.
“It was a very physical contest,” said the Northern Ireland international. “However, across the court we battled hard and made our presence felt.
“We were very slow to start but in the second quarter we really made our mark and gained the momentum. I’m just delighted we got the win in the dying minutes.”
TN can make it three wins on the bounce at strugglers Loughborough Lightning on Saturday.
