WHITLEY Warriors moved a step closer to retaining the English National League title after a 5-1 win over Sheffield at Hillheads last night.

Completing a weekend double over their Yorkshire opponents, who they defeated 6-3 in Sheffield on Saturday, Whitley took the lead in the ninth minute when Adam Reynolds stole in behind the Spartans’ defence to net with ease.

The same player then doubled the advantage at 14.20 before Ryan Sample marched forward to poke the puck home on 18 minutes to round off a good session for the home side.

And the Warriors were quick off their blocks in the middle period with Callum Watson on hand, following a scramble in the Sheffield goalmouth, to increase the lead at 21.53.

Dan Harris smashed the puck in from just inside the away blue line to delight the home fans.

However, that was to be a high point of the night as the Warriors spent much of the time remaining making trips to the penalty box.

The only other goal of the game came at 30.40 when Ryan Handysides netted on a powerplay for the visitors.

WHITLEY SCORERS: Reynolds 2+0, Harris & Watson 1+1, Sample 1+0, Culley 0+2, Good, Kippin, Windridge, Crammond & Robinson 0+1.
