Tyne Bridge Harrier Tony Carter was an emphatic winner of yesterday’s 34th Northumberland Coastal Run from Beadnell to Alnmouth.
An early sea mist thankfully kept runners cool for most of the 14M route, though the hot sun eventually broke out as the leaders approached the final 3M.
Carter, third in 2012, broke away from the leading group after 2M extending his advantage to over 2mins at the finish line on Alnmouth Beach.
In a close battle for second place, Gateshead’s Conrad Franks outsprinted Scottish veteran Keith Hood, with Kevin Jeffress of Tyne Bridge finishing fourth.
Jo Gascoigne-Owens from host club Alnwick was a popular winner of the Women’s race finishing in eighth position overall in the field of over 800 runners.
Deborah Appleton, winner in 2009 and second last year, finished 5mins 35secs behind, while Sarah Burrell took third place. Appleton was also the leading veteran.
:: Gateshead Harriers finished second to Liverpool Harriers at the final National Youth Development League Meeting for Under 13 and Under 15s at the International Stadium. The hosts were in third place overall behind Sale, Manchester, who defeated Liverpool on countback.
English Schools bronze medallist Ashlyn Bland won the Under 15 200m taking 0.25secs off her pb legal time, and 100m.
