Northumbria won’t be complacent

TEAM Northumbria tip off their new season with a National Cup match against new Division Two team Leeds Carnegie on October 20.

Coach Deirdre Hayes said: “Although they are new to the national league we do not take any team lightly.”

If Northumbria get through the first round they will host current cup holders Sheffield Hatters, who lifted all three trophies which were on offer last season.

In their first league game of the season, Northumbria will have a double weekend with games again newly-promoted UWIC Steelers and Sevenoaks on October 27 and 28.

Big home fixtures include their last game of the season in March when they face Rhondda Rebels, who will be competing in Europe this season, and league winners Sheffield Hatters on December 1.

Hayes will be looking to improve on the team’s sixth-place finish last season, which was their first in Division One after winning promotion.

Team Northumbria’s development team tip off their Division Two North season with three away games before hosting Manchester Mystics at the end of October.

Hayes added: “This team is important to the Division One team as it gives the younger players court time and experience.

“Last year was the first year we had two teams, and I am really looking for the players from this team to deliver on the court, both in Division Two and stepping up to the first team.

“I hope to have news next week of additional signings. We are nearly there but there are a few things to iron out.”
