NEWCASTLE Vipers’ plans for next season have been dealt a massive blow after they were told they cannot play at Newcastle Arena.
The Elite League club announced this week they had struck a deal to play the vast majority of games at the venue in 2009-10, but it transpires they had jumped the gun.
“The discussions with the arena had been going on for some time, and they weren’t as straight forward as we’d hoped, but we were close to agreeing a deal,” explained general manager Jaimie Longmuir. “When I met with the arena on Monday, when I expected things to be finalised, they said they couldn’t offer us ice for the season. I was gobsmacked.”
The Vipers spent the second half of last season playing in Whitley Bay, where they suffered low attendances. It now seems their only option is to return next term.
