Year has gone with a real swing for Boldon golfers

GAVIN Nesbit captured Boldon’s first county title for more than half a century in a centenary season brimming with achievers, but he’s not sure if he’s going to be even the club No 1 for much longer.

Boldon’s men’s, ladies and junior teams all carried off 2012 league titles, with Nesbit playing his full part in that and winning the Durham County Matchplay Championship on his home track.

He also became the county Player of the Year by virtue of finishing top of the Order of Merit, beating the North East’s No 1 amateur and Journal Champion of Champions, Tyneside’s Ricky Lee, into second place by 200 points. The 33-year-old Nesbit lives on Seaburn sea front and runs a nursing agency in Darlington with his brother Gareth.

He said: “This has been a magical centenary year for Boldon and not just because of the success on the course.

“The men’s and ladies captains – Fred Palmer and Alyson Chapman – are both as keen as mustard and their infectious enthusiasm has spread all through the club.”

Palmer was for ten years the Junior Liaison Officer at a club famous for its junior friendly policies.

He was succeeded by Ashley Lamb two years ago.

Nesbit added: “We had our presentation night recently and the clubhouse was teeming. I have been a member 20 years and it was the biggest turnout I can remember.

“Such is the strength of our junior section these days one of them, Rhys Thompson, has played for the county men’s team.

“Even in a wet summer like this, Thompson has cut his handicap from four to scratch and another youngster Rian Lamb won our club scratch matchplay tournament as a 14-year-old.

“I am going to have my work cut out hanging on as the club No 1 here!”

One of Nesbit’s team-mates in Boldon’s North Durham Union league side is David Conway, the operations director of Maxim Facilities Management.

Maxim, a contract cleaning services firm, sponsor the NDU and Conway said: “Boldon introduce the sport into schools and juniors are encouraged to enter men’s competitions.

“The seven-year-olds who joined then are 17 now and, believe me, the hard work has paid off.

“They are hitting the ball miles now!”

The youngsters – who have the benefit of coaching from club pro Kevin Whale – were not the only ones enjoying the limelight this season.

Captains Palmer and Chapman landed aces at the same hole early in the season and became the first captains to pair up and win the club’s mixed foursomes competition.

Palmer also took the senior championship.
