North East golfer Tom Hennessy has enjoyed a dream trip to Spain - where he met world superstars Sergio Garcia and Jose-Maria Olazabal. The Bedlingtonshire Golf Club member jetted off to Club de campo del Mediterraneo in Catsellon to take part in the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Pro Am Competition, which was hosted by Sergio and featured a host of his fellow European Tour professionals.
Tom, a 16 handicapper, won the trip after buying a Tour Burner TP Driver at Philips Golf Discount on the Camperdown Industrial Estate in Newcastle.
His name was entered into a national competition run by TaylorMade.
Tom couldn't believe his luck when he won.
He said: "It was a brilliant trip from start to finish, even though I arrived in Spain at dinner time on the Saturday without luggage or clubs as there had been a problem on our connecting flight from Paris.
"We were all staying in the same hotel as the pro golfers who were playing in the competition, which made for a great atmosphere. The rooms were fantastic and everything was paid for by addidas-TaylorMade.
"They even arranged for me, David Forster and Keith Beattie, the rep from TaylorMade, to go to the golf club that night and watch the Real Madrid v Barcelona football match with Sergio and his friends.
"That's where we met Sergio and Olazabal. They were both fantastic and very chatty. Sergio was very open and it was as if we had known each other for years - we all had a great night."
Tom works for the family business, Tom Hennessy Interiors in Bedlington, which specialises in kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms.
Tom added: "Because our luggage had still not turned up on the Sunday, addidas-TaylorMade kitted us all out with new clubs, drivers and putters and then took us to the pro shop and gave us new addidas golf shoes, shorts and jackets as well as TaylorMade balls and gloves, which was a fantastic added bonus.
"We teed off at 10.15am with our Tour player, Carlos Rodilez. I thought we had a great game coming in with a team score of 12 under par but we didn't even come in the top 10 as the winning score was 22 under - and you can guess whose team that was ... Sergio's.
"We had a lovely meal after our round in the clubhouse restaurant and the day was a magical once-in-a-lifetime experience.
"We played the course again on the Monday, only this time our clubs and luggage had arrived. I had a wonderful game, shooting a 68.
"All in all it was a fantastic trip and one I will not forget for a very long time.
"And I'm also very happy with my new Taylor-Made driver, which won me such a brilliant trip - although I have not had that much chance to use it lately due to the weather!"
