Three Days Of Top Golf

Golfers from far and wide gathered in Northumberland for a three-day tournament played in the 'four ball better ball' format over the Alnwick, Bellingham and Rothbury courses.

Golfers from far and wide gathered in Northumberland for a three-day tournament played in the 'four ball better ball' format over the Alnwick, Bellingham and Rothbury courses. The event, which was inaugurated in 2007, is the product of a collaboration between Rothbury Golf Club and the local Hotel and Guest House Association to promote golf and tourism within the county.

It is sponsored by the Duke of Northumberland, Northumberland County Council and a number of local patrons.

The challenge on day one was the tricky parkland course at Alnwick with its dramatic coastal views and testing layout.

A course favouring the long hitter, there are some difficult holes, including the huge par 5 12th - three good whacks on any day.

Then it was off to Bellingham, a gem hidden away in the heart of the county, where the premium is on accuracy - no more so than at the tiny par 3 3rd: hit the target and you will have a birdie chance but miss and you'll be lucky to escape with a bogey.

The final round was played over the recently re-modeled Rothbury course, now a fine 18-hole track with a brand new clubhouse facility, having survived its first hundred years as a nine-holer.

The setting is magnificent with stunning views from the clubhouse out across the course towards the Cheviots and Bonnie Scotland.

The winning men's team was Phil and Kevin Ginger (Alnwick) while Mike Murtha and Christine Skjelhaug (Saltburn) triumphed in the mixed competition with 119 points and 124 points respectively.

As last year, Northumberland Estates provided the trophies for the winners and their prize was £150 per pair.

The daily results were: Alnwick: Gents - Paul Loomes (12 handicap, Haverhill) and Mike Smith (26, Brett Vale) 44 points; Mixed - Mike Murtha (10, Saltburn) and Christine Skjelhaug (17, Saltburn) 42 points; Bellingham: Gents - Paul Loomes and Mike Smith 41 points; Mixed - Keith (14) and Carol Wilkinson (18, Aston Vale) 42 points; Rothbury: Gents - Phil (13) and Kevin Ginger (21, Alnwick) 45 points; Mixed - Keith and Carol Wilkinson 42 points.
