The Prince's Trust golf day on July 5 at Slaley Hall, is one of a series of star-studded sporting events taking place over the summer in aid of the charity.

Celebrity teams representing the Duke of Northumberland and the Earl of Durham will be battling it out at football, cricket and clay pigeon shooting as well as the golf tournament, for the Prince's Trust Challenge Trophy. The event, which is supported by The Journal, aims to raise enough money for the trust to help 5,000 youngsters in the North-East by the end of 2008.

It has already been confirmed that Newcastle United and England goal scoring legend, Alan Shearer, will be captaining the Duke's football team against World Cup winner Jack Charlton for Lord Durham.

The golf day will see members of the public tee-off against the likes of actor Tim Healy and Newcastle United legend Peter Beardsley. It is expected to involve 80 players playing over 18 holes. Of these 42 will be paying guests at £500 per head.

Sponsors for the Prince's Trust Challenge Cup are construction firm Esh Group, law firm Dickinson Dees, financial giants Northern Rock, car dealer Stratstone, sports company JJB, ITV Tyne Tees, ncjMedia, publisher of The Journal, and Emap - owner of Metro Radio Magic and TFM.
