To fill the considerable gaps left on their fairways at short notice, they are running a cut-price stableford sweep teeing off between 7.30am and 5.30pm tomorrow (£15 per round, £50 per fourball). If you want to enter the sweep, you will pay an extra £2 and all the prize money will be paid out in the form of a PGA voucher reedemable in any club’s golf shop. Golf lessons

WESTERHOPE are holding free taster sessions for people who have never played golf. The sessions will be held on July 21 and August 4, 11 and 25 from 10am to 11am and 11am to noon. Cone’s hot iron

MORPETH’S 2006 captain, Harry Cone, was a late stand-in for the Newcastle and District League team which was beaten by The Journal Dream Team in an inaugural challenge match at Prudhoe. Cone won the nearest the pin competition when he was 72 inches from the flag with a two-iron at the 175-yard seventh.

BELFORD’S monthly medal brought Michael Turnbull the fourth hole-in-one of his career. Turnbull, a PTI sergeant in the RAF, aced the 165-yard third hole with a six-iron.

Shearer wins

FORMER England and Newcastle United footballer Alan Shearer, a member of The Northumberland, won the Bentley Newcastle Golf Classic at The Wynyard club.
