AFTER 16 years working at Parklands Golf Club, Craig Fetherston has moved to Centurion Park – the home of Wallsend Golf Club – and has been appointed as their head teaching professional.
Craig is looking forward to working hard on building up the junior section of the club into a strong position, working in conjunction with the Golf Foundation.
He said: “I have always enjoyed coaching, even though it has been on a part-time basis in the past due to commitments in the pro shop. Now the opportunity has arisen to concentrate on coaching full-time and I am very excited about it.”
He added: “The complex is undergoing a lot of development and, once completed, will have some of the finest facilities in the North East. The members have made me very welcome and have been very warming and supportive.”
In 2008, Newcastle’s STR Enterprises purchased Wallsend Golf Club – now renamed Centurion Park – from North Tyneside Council as it looked to expand its portfolio beyond bars and hotels.
The firm, which acquired the 170-acre site through its subsidiary Keeping Inn Ltd, has implemented a major refurbishment programme and all the facilities are being given a new lease of life. The bar and lounge area have already been completely overhauled and an impressive new golf shop added. The driving range has been substantially upgraded and, with the addition of automatic tees, heating, new fencing and range markers, the facility is now an excellent practice area.
The company was set up in 1996 by John Sanderson and his wife Elizabeth after the purchase of the Victoria Hotel at Bamburgh. They now own six sites, including the Manor House Hotel and Country Club in West Auckland, which they operate with the help of sons Jason, Christopher and Richard.
Craig will be a major asset to the team at Centurion Park and his drive, experience and enthusiasm for the game will benefit all those who visit the North Tyneside centre.
