Let the games begin

The Winter Development Programme is complete and it is now time to look forward to the 2007 golfing year.

Our focus has now turned to the annual friendly match against the Lothians on Saturday 29th April, which this year returns to Duddingston Golf Club based just outside of Edinburgh. Following this match it will be down to some serious business, beginning the defence of the 2006 Northern Counties winners' title, against Lancashire at the magnificent Royal Birkdale Golf Club.

The following individuals have been selected for the friendly match against the Lothians, and we believe this team will form the core for selection during the season: James Curry (Prudhoe), Simon Lee (Newcastle United), Andy Minnikin (Gosforth), Phil Waugh (Hexham), Phil Ridden (City of Newcastle), Craig Wilkinson (Blyth), Craig Penny (Morpeth), Shaun Heads (Hexham), Mark Penny (Morpeth), Dan Shevill (Prudhoe), Garrick Porteous (Bamburgh Castle), Kris Gray (Slaley Hall) and John Todd (City of Newcastle) who will hold us in good stead as the travelling reserve.

The average age of this team is 20 years old, which leads me to believe that our golf development programme and selection process is functioning well. The future looks bright and is full of opportunities. With the correct application, desire and determination I believe that this squad will continue onwards and upwards.

2007 is the counties centenary year. Therefore we already have something to celebrate. Anything else that comes our way will be an added bonus.

I should take this opportunity to thank the Development Team for their continued effort throughout the winter. They are Supercoach J R Harrison, the Chuckle Brothers, John and Steve Mckenna and our Fitness and Flexibility Expert, Louise Lewis. I would also like to thank Matfen Hall for the hospitality and the use of the fantastic facilities. If the Development Squad learns only one thing from our time together during the winter then this is purely down to the dedication, professionalism and enthusiasm that is continuously displayed by the Development Team.

Northumberland Golf would like to thank our golf ball sponsors for there vision in supporting Team Northumberland 2007.
