A TEAM of four ladies from North Yorkshire are celebrating after capturing a big championship win. The ladies from Hunley Hall Golf Club near Saltburn competed against clubs from all over the Yorkshire area to reach the finals of the ADP Yorkshire Team Championships held at Ilkley Golf Club.

The team - Sheila Wilkinson, Anne Wetherill, Julia Leng and captain Jo Davy - reached the final stages after being unbeaten in the round-robin league stage with five wins and one draw against Forest of Galtres, Headingley and Bonday golf clubs.

Hunley Hall played against previous winners Shipley in the semi-final in the morning and with the match poised at one all, Anne Wetherill was 2 down with 3 to play and with an excellent fight back, won on the 18th to put Hunley into the final.

In the big showdown against Willow Valley, who were the reigning champions, the match was again level at one all, and this time Sheila Wilkinson was 2 down with 3 to play. She managed to pull one hole back and then won on the 18th to level the match and force a sudden death play off.

Sheila then made an excellent par 3 on the 20th hole to finally secure victory for Hunley.

This is the first championship win for Hunley Hall Ladies since the section was formed 14 years ago and the third attempt at securing a win in this competition.

WESTERHOPE'S Michael Nesbitt joined Cumbria's Craig Goodfellow in the GB and Ireland team that took on the US in the Ryder Cup-style event for club pros on both sides of the Atlantic. Nesbitt did well in the BG&I team that was skippered by Gary Alliss, though they narrowly missed a history-making win on American soil as Team USA reclaimed the Llandudno Trophy by 13.5-12.5 points.

Spike lost his singles match to Ron Philo Jnr by 3&2 with Goodfellow winning 2up against Alan Schulte.

Earlier, Spike and Craig had enjoyed a win over Philo and Tim Thelen 1up in the fourballs while they gained a half in their foursomes match against Don Yrene and Ryan Benzel.

The North pairing started the event with a big 6&5 triumph over Philo and Chip Sullivan.
