August was a great month for us here at Close House but September is promising to be even better. Three major exciting events are scheduled to be held here - our NE & NW PGA Pro Am, the Golf North East Amateur Classic and of course the TSG European Long Drive Championship.
Over 100 people will be attending the Golf North East Amateur Classic (3rd September), as golf clubs from across the region send their qualifiers to play in one of the biggest golf events in the North East.
The NE &NW PGA pro-am (10th September) will see the finest PGA professionals in the region play the Filly course. The current course record is a 3 under par 67 set at last year's event and held by Close House Teaching Professional Jonathan Lupton. It would be great to see a new course record set at this event.
The last month has been extremely busy as we work to bring together all the details for the TSG European Long Drive Championship.
I have been working closely with Neil Hodgson from the Long Drivers of Europe and also Elain Dodds, our Events Sales Manager here at Close House. So I can't take all the credit for what I am sure will be a superb event.
This is the first time a North East venue has been chosen as host in the six-year history of the TSG European Long Drive Golf Championships, where some of Europe's top athletes have been known to actually pulverise a golf ball!
The sport of long driving is all about power and control and has a huge following of spectators and players.
Players from around Europe will be competing including Joe 'The Total Package' Miller and Adam 'Stinger' Stacey from the UK.
This event will mean the golfing fraternity from around the world will have their eyes firmly fixed on this prestigious event and location. Children from golf clubs from the region have also been invited to play a Junior Long Drive event.
The event will be held on 11th, 12th and 13th September with all of Europe's best long drivers anticipated to attend.
Players will include Europe's No 1 and 2 from Sweden Mikael Lindblom and Patrik Anderson, the World No 3 in 2005 Adam Stacey and Europe's No 1 lady Jessica Wallstrom from Sweden.
Also certain to attend will be the unofficial world longest drive record holder, Paul Slater, who smashed a golf ball over 884 yards in 2006!
The best day for spectators to attend the event will be Sunday 13th September and if you are thinking of attending the event you will not be disappointed.
On Sunday admission will be free and there will be lots of fun games for all the family to get involved in as well as seeing some of Europe's longest hitters.
Events will include, golf simulators, a hole-in-one challenge, PGA golf tuition, Junior Tri Golf and many other golf games. Refreshments suitable for all the family will be available throughout the day.
Meanwhile, work on our new golf course - the Colt - is continuing at a frightening pace.
Contractors M.J. Abbotts have now sown the first seeds on holes 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 and it won't be long before the first green shoots are poking through.
The construction of the golf course will be very close to being complete towards the end of October with the contractors returning in the Spring of 2010 to finish any areas that still need work.
