John Oakley off to a fine start

JOHN Oakley made a winning debut in the Northumberland County Seniors Championship at Gosforth.

JOHN Oakley made a winning debut in the Northumberland County Seniors Championship at Gosforth.

Having played for Northumberland more than 60 times, the Whitley Bay player showed he’s lost none of his competitive edge with two rounds of 72 over the Bridle Path course to win by three shots.

John was pushed all the way by David Peel (Slaley Hall) 74 73 and George Sales (Backworth) 73 79 playing together in the last group with David securing the runners-up spot after two days of excellent play during which some great golf was witnessed.

Fine performances were also recorded from Bill Blackie (Magdelene Fields) 75 73, winner in 2008, Iain Logue (Northumberland) 76 74 and Westerhope’s Richard Farrelly 75 77, the defending champion, who filled the third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.

Congratulations also go to George Sales on winning the Tim Bull Cup for the best nett score over the first 18 holes (73-6-67) winning on the back nine from Paul Clarke (Hexham) with 75-8-67.

The cup for the best gross score over the first 18 holes for competitors over 65 years of age was won by Dick Johnson (Northumberland).

The playing conditions throughout the tournament were absolutely first class with tremendous fast and true greens.

The 2011 Seniors Championship will be hosted by Burgham Park.
