Hobbs ladies keeping it in the family

THREE generations of the Hobbs family played in the Garesfield Ladies Team Open.

Margaret Hobbs, her two daughters Linda and Karen and her granddaughter Kirsty played in the tournament which attracted 26 teams.

Margaret started as a member at Beamish in 1968 and is now a member at Stocksfield, while Linda plays at Garesfield and Karen and her daughter Kirsty play at Forres in Scotland.

Both Linda and Karen started playing golf as juniors but gave up the game for a short while before starting again in their 20s - Karen joined the RAF and went on to become RAF champion in 1994 when she had a handicap of four.

The whole family are also keen swimmers with both Margaret and Linda being ex-competitive swimmers. Karen still swims for Forres Masters and set a British record for 200m freestyle while 14-year-old Kirsty is also a keen competitive swimmer.

It seems some things do run in families and Garesfield hope to see them back as a team in next year’s event.

This year’s winners were a formidable team from Tyneside in Lillian Bennett, Pat Macintosh, Karen Lee and Cath Jenkins.
