Event now more popular than ever

THE Northumberland three-day golf event 2010 – sponsored by The Northumberland Estates and Bellhaven Breweries – has, once again, been a success.

It was played over three courses – Bellingham, Alnmouth (Foxton) and Rothbury – from August 10-12.

This competition, first introduced in 2007 by Anne Brown from Rothbury Golf Club, has gone from strength to strength. It has attracted competitors from all over the country and this year was no exception, with 84 of the 144 entries being from outside the region.

Players came from as far afield as Southampton, Suffolk and Wales, and the number of entrants increased by 60 on last year. The two main competitions – gents pairs and mixed pairs four-ball better ball Stableford format – were played over the three courses, which offered competitors a variety of challenges.

Even the torrential showers on the first day, when play had to be suspended, didn’t dampen spirits.

There was very keen competition for the honour of winning the event and, this year, that accolade went to Nathan Travers and Michael Rutter of Ryton Golf Club (Winner Gents’ Pairs – 126 points, pictured left) and Neil and Joan Pearson of Glen Gorse Golf Club, Leicester, above. (Winner Mixed Pairs – 122 points)

The daily results were: -

Bellingham: Gents - Les English & Les Conley (Newcastle United)

Mixed - Neil and Joan Pearson (Glen Gorse) (on back 9)

Alnmouth (Foxton): Gents - Nathan Travers & Michael Rutter (Ryton)

Mixed - Nigel & Sue Oldham (Glen Gorse)

Rothbury: Gents - Nathan Travers & Michael Rutter (Ryton) (on back 9)

Mixed - Neil and Joan Pearson (Glen Gorse) (on back 9)

The Chairman of Northumberland County Council, Councillor Marcia Bircham, presented the Northumberland Estates Trophies. This was followed by a Northumbrian Evening which was enjoyed by all.

Friendships were made and renewed and at the end of it all, the common refrain was, “We’ve had a great time. See you next year!”
