Clark Orders himself a leg up in Merit

DAVID Clark “legged it” to his first PGA North Region Order of Merit victory of the season when he won a five-man play-off in the Rocar Moores Fixby Classic at Huddersfield.

The 32-year-old Morpeth teaching professional continued on the roll that started a couple of months ago, which has so far carried him to eight wins and two second places in his last 10 outings.

And he attributed his resurgent form to bringing his legs into play more.

“I was practising on the range and trying to work out why my game had gone off the boil when I had one of those swing thoughts which everyone gets from time to time. It told me to get more aggressive with my legs and it’s certainly paying off,” said Clark.

And paying is the operative word. “I need to boost my bank balance before winter sets in because it all goes quiet then on the teaching front,” he explained.

Clark, who last won a regional ranking event back in 2004 at the Manchester Open, recovered from a double bogey at the first hole in the second and final round, quickly atoning for the lapse with a brace of birdies then keeping the momentum going in driving rain to post a 70.

“I just told myself to keep ticking over which was difficult in that weather,” he said as he tagged his score on to his opening 71 for a one-under-par total.

He saved probably his best shot for the play-off hole – the 156-yard par three eighth where he struck a serene six iron to six inches to secure a winning birdie.

That ended the hopes of Matfen Hall assistant Paul Fiddes, Mossock Hall’s persistent David Shacklady who incredibly has yet to win an Order of Merit title in 20-plus years of trying; Swinton Park’s Dave Smith and former Leeds cup winner John Wells from Cherry Burton.

LEADING SCORES: 141 David Clark (Morpeth) 71 70, David Shacklady (Mossock Hall) 73 68, Paul Fiddes (Matfen Hall) 72 69, John Wells (Cherry Burton) 71 70, David Smith (Swinton Park) 71 70; 142 Paul; Grannell (Vale Royal Abbey) 72 70, James Salt (Ashton-under-Lyne) 70 72, Jon Cheetham (Gatley) 71 71, Andrew Barnett (North Wales Golf Range) 71 71.
