Big-hearted Westerhope

Westerhope's Joe Lant will enjoy fulsome support for his Captain's Charity Day on Saturday in aid of the Arthritis Research Campaign.

Westerhope's Joe Lant will enjoy fulsome support for his Captain's Charity Day on Saturday in aid of the Arthritis Research Campaign. His sister, Jean Bays, suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and the members have responded with a full house of 40 fourballs. "When you consider they are paying £10 a head to play their own course, this speaks volumes for the quality of the Westerhope membership," said Lant.

Green power

ALNWICK have appointed Les Tate as greenkeeper and Colin Donaldson as his assistant following the moves of Kerry Shotton to Alnmouth Village and Mark Linsley to Alnmouth. Alnwick secretary Lawrie Stewart said: "The new lads are doing a good job, because our greens are in great shape."

Adam a big hit

COUNTY DURHAM juniors may have lost 13-5 to the seniors at Birtley but Blackwell Grange youngster Adam Bates was far from overawed, despite losing to Ramside Hall's Steve Dance by one hole. Bates, one down after 16, drove the 287-yard 17th and made the putt for an eagle to take the match to the 18th.

Ladies on-line

LADIES who peruse the Elga website will be pleased to know it came back on yesterday after going off-line overnight, when it was defaced by a group of hackers, presumably of the non-golfing variety. A spokeswoman said: "We would like to assure all our website visitors this attack has no effect on them and their security is in no way compromised. We are taking steps to ensure this  doesn't happen again." For any ladies who don't know about the Elga website, the address is englishladiesgolf.org
