WALTER Wilson has recently been awarded honorary Life Membership of the National Golf Club Stewards Association (NGCSA).
Following 21 years service as Regional Secretary of the North East Golf Club Stewards Association (NEGCSA), Walter (pictured) was presented with his award by National Chairman Peter Barnes at Whitley Bay Golf Club.
Formed in 1912 by a small band of Stewards, many may not know too much about this Association but their objectives are to found and administer a Benevolent Fund to assist members, associates and life members in need and dependants in necessitous circumstances of deceased members.
The Association also provides and administers an Employment Agency to assist members in obtaining employment and arranges Golf Competitions and Matches as may be decided from time to time by the executive committee.
The NGCSA currently has approximately 400 members and is divided into seven sections; Southern, Midland, East Anglian, Wales & West, North East, North, North Wales with members in Scotland and Ireland.
Throughout the years, Walter has represented the North East at many National Executive meetings and successfully processed grants from the Golf Club Stewards Benevolent Fund to help his North East members in their times of need.
He served as the National Chairman in 2003-2004.
Walter and his late wife Sheila took over as steward and stewardess at Heworth Golf Club in 1987, where they looked after members and visitors for over 13 years. He has been a member at the club for 33 years and still manages to play golf three times a week off a respectable 16-handicap.
