BOLDON Golf Club is gearing up for its fast approaching centenary. The club, founded 1912, is located just outside Sunderland and only eight miles from Newcastle.

A reasonably flat parkland course, Boldon offers a test that will excite golfers of all levels of ability, irrespective of experience or handicap.

The great Harry Vardon - one of the leading golf course architects of the early 20th Century and a six-time winner of the Open Championships - designed the lay-out.

The golf club has seen a lot of changes in the last couple of years with the appointment of a full time club secretary/manager, Alastair Greenfield.

The 1st, 6th and 15th holes have all been lengthened which has increased the standard scratch score to 71 with par of 72. Also, further alterations and improvements are planned in the next few years. The head greenkeeper John Devlin and his staff have completed all this work.

A considerable amount of money has been spent on new machinery for the golf course with further machinery purchase planned for this year.

A new irrigation system has been designed and installed to replace a system that was both old-fashioned and inefficient.

Plans have also been drawn up and submitted for a new greenkeepers' complex

to replace buildings which are over 30 years old and no longer suitable.

At the end of 2006 June Gartwaite took over the catering franchise at the golf club and is already gaining an excellent reputation.

A new business relationship has been established between the golf club and Sean Richardson at Phipps Golf Ltd. This agreement will give both the golf club and Phipps Golf Ltd a long and productive partnership.

A North East and North West PGA ProAm is planned for Friday, July 11th. This will be the first ProAm the golf club has staged for many years.

Boldon have a flourishing Junior Section and last year won the Durham County North East League and the Durham County Champion of Champions.

Membership opportunities are available for all categories and visitors are most welcome - tailored packages for visiting groups and societies are available.
