Academy success

TYNESIDE has been chosen to be the venue for one of this year’s Lee Westwood Golf Academies.

TYNESIDE has been chosen to be the venue for one of this year’s Lee Westwood Golf Academies. After last year’s successful launch, the English Golf Union has announced their continued support as well as that of Westwood, who was a member of the EGU’s Elite Coaching Squad and represented England in the Home Internationals in 1993 before turning pro.

Since then, he has had a sparkling career, with 20 European tour titles to his name, ending his season last year as Europe’s number one.

After a successful first year, the Westwood Academies are back and Tyneside will be one of 17 three-day academies offering the chance to attend a five-day residential academy which focuses closely on coaching and includes a visit from Westwood.

Tyneside will host the North East Academy on August 2-4 and the coaching programme will cover every aspect of the game, incorporating off-course sessions on etiquette, rules, marking your card, nutrition, fitness and psychology. There is also a competitive part to the academy where attendees will play in a series of competitions on and off the course, and the overall winner will win a day’s golf with Westwood at Lindrick August 30.

Westwood said: “I was delighted with how my academies started in 2009 and I am excited about the prospect of expanding and making the experience even more worthwhile for the youngsters that attend.

“I am very passionate about my academy and, with the support of the English Golf Union, I am certain they will grow from strength to strength.”

Another date in the North for the academies is August 4-6 at Rudding Park near Harrogate.
