Crampton in fine form

Durham City's Ian Crampton led the region's charge in yesterday's London Marathon.

Durham City's Ian Crampton led the region's charge in yesterday's London Marathon.

Crampton, who was competing in the London event for the third time, recorded 2hr 36min 24sec for 82nd position which earned him first place among the over-45s.

Heaton Harriers' James Buis, recent winner of the North Tyneside 10km race, ran nearly a minute quicker than last year to finish in 2:42:45 which was good enough for 182nd position.

Chester-le-Street duo Darren Purvis and Ian Bloomfield crossed the line together in 194th and 195th place respectively in times of 2:43:24 and 2:43:25 with Bloomfield, taking second place among the over-50s.

Len Christopher of Sunderland Harriers, finished third in the over-60 category in a time of 2:58:59.

Claremont's Angela Hibbs was the region's leading female, improving from 166th last year to 54th this time round after clocking 2:59:54, an improvement of over 10 minutes on last year's time. Kate Chapman (Morpeth) finished in 137th position in 3:11:20 in what was her marathon debut. Morpeth's Martin Scaife opted for his marathon debut in the Antwerp Marathon and was rewarded with seventh place in a time of 2:25:50.
