Cameron Boyek secures easy win at Durham Schools

JUNIOR international Cameron Boyek, running for the Darlington area, easily won the Senior title at Saturday's Durham Schools Cross Country Championships at a bright but frostbound Meadowfield Sports Centre.

The North Eastern Under 20 champion led all the way over the three laps coming home well clear of Gateshead’s Barry Maskell.

Luke Clark of South Tyneside was an impressive winner of the Intermediate race. Easington’s Chloe Price won the Senior Girls’ race from Zoe Hewitson of Darlington.

Lydia Turner of Derwentside, winner of the Junior event in 2010 and 2011, took her first Internediate title.

Turner, the North Eastern Under 15 champion, crossed the finish line 12secs clear of the region’s Under 17 champion, Amy Etherington of Durham Central.

Joe Armstrong of Durham Central was the easiest winner of the day in the Junior Boys’ event. Olivia Bateman of Gateshead won the Junior Girls’ title.

Lizzie Cramb of South West Durham and James Hughes of Durham Central were successful in the Minor (Year 7) races. Durham Central were the most successful area, winning six of the eight team titles.

The first 16 in each event, now compete in the Inter Counties event at Kirkby Stephen on February 4.

Gateshead Harrier, Alona-Mae Lonsdale in her first season of 300m running, won the Northern Athletics Under 17 Indoor title at Sheffield on Saturday. Lonsdale also competed in the 60m, finishing 5th in the final (8.23).

In the latter event, Gateshead’s Rachel Highfield, the defending champion, was second.
