BIRTLEY’S Jon-Lewis Dickinson bids for his first major professional title in Liverpool tonight.
Having already won Prizefighter and English cruisrweight belts, the 26-year-old meets Shane McPhilbin for the vacant 14st 4lbs crown in the chief support bout to the David Price-Audley Harrison heavyweight showdown.
Dickinson has won 11 of his 13 fights in the paid ranks against McPhilbin’s record of eight wins and three defeats.
Meanwhile, Martin Ward has been promised a British title shot before the end of January.
Promoter Phil Jeffries wrote to the board asking them to give Ward the chance to fight for the British bantamweight belt when the former Birtley ABC fighter beat the experienced Jason Booth for the English title at the end of September.
The board have decided Ward should fight champion Jamie McDonnell – who took the title from Darlington's Stuart Hall – for the title, and purse bids have to be lodged by November 17.
Jeffries and Ward's manager Dave Garside are hoping to stage the fight in Ward's home venue, Rainton Meadows Arena at Houghton-le-Spring.
