A goal midway through the second half from recalled midfielder Jamie Chandler saw Gateshead get their promotion campaign back on track in the capital.

The fact the single goal win was against play-off rivals Barnet made it all the sweeter for manager Gary Mills whose side is back in the top six.

In a tight division the Tynesiders, facing another six-pointer at Salisbury this weekend, will need to build on this win – only their second in nine games. Manager Mills was delighted that his side dictated the tempo of the game at The Hive, limiting the Bees to mainly shots from outside the box, while providing the sting in the tail.

“We knew if we lost at Barnet we’d be eight points behind them and the gap is now two points, so it was a massive win for us,” said Mills.

“It was an incredible performance from start to finish and we dictated and dominated the game. A clean sheet and 1-0 win away from home is always the best result for me.

“The side are grinders, they never give in. We’ve had two 1-1 draws recently against good sides when we’ve only had ten men and that shows the character we have.

“The shape and discipline of the players were excellent.”

The first half was largely uneventful until both sides had a chance to take the lead in the closing stages.

A Ben Clark foul saw Charlie Adams’ free-kick drop for defender Jack Saville.

His shot was blocked and the Heed immediately broke for James Marwood to be in on goal.

The leading scorer, however, was unable to go round Bees keeper Nick Jupp and then John Oster, playing in an advanced role, put a good chance wide after the restart.

Adam Bartlett tipped Curtis Weston’s 30-yard drive past the post while James Brown’s powerful header from Oster’s corner was straight at Jupp.

Marwood was then almost in again before he found Oster, whose deft 71st-minute chip saw Chandler loop a header over Jupp for the winner.
