CONSIDERING the conditions some cracking fish have been taken, topped by Newbiggin angler Dennis Wade’s cod of 9lb 1oz 8drams, taken at Swine Dene.

Having taken another smaller fish, it gave Wade second place in the New Ship Inn Open, which was won by Redcar angler Bernard Westgarth with four cod, taken from Seaton Point for 12lb 11oz.

Robert Burton pulled a nice cod of 8lb 14oz out of the Tyne at Hebburn in the Alberta Open, the heaviest bag going to Stephen Coyle with 15 fish for 12lb 3oz, taken at the River Police HQ.

However, it was a codling of 4lb 6oz that won the Blackhall Open for Dean Turnbull, while Colin Bell amassed a catch of nine fish for 266cm in Eastenders Open, Chris Hossack taking the longest a cracking flounder of 43cm.

Pleasure anglers have also taken some good fish, many coming from the mid-reaches of the Tyne.

Tony Ellies took one of 7lb 8oz, Stan Parkin taking one of 5lb 6oz, Darren Browne taking a personal best of 6lb 7oz on his second cast, Jim Brook taking codling of 3lb 1oz & 4lb 11oz, while John Powell, fishing with him, landed one of 6lb 12oz. Trevor Green popped down to Roker Pier for a short session. Using only a hand line, Green took 24 sizeable whiting, four flounder and a 2lb codling. Returning a few nights later with his friend, this time using rods, they took a dozen codling.

With only the mid-section of the Tyne giving decent cod, Neil Cutler fished South Shields Pier to win Cleadon’s match with a mixed bag of 13 fish, made up of whiting, dab, and codling 13lb 6oz, including the best, a codling of 3lb 8oz.

Whiting and flounder from Blyth beach made up the top catches in Blyth’s match, Keith Smith taking 20 whiting and four flounder for 17lb 10oz, Ian Greenacre taking 24 whiting for 17lb 3oz, best 1lb 3oz.

The winning bag in Amble’s match came from Embleton, Jason French taking 15 flounder for 12lb 14oz 8drams, the best 1lb 8oz 12drams. Ian Harrogate’s second-placed bag of eight whiting and eight flounder for 11lb 7oz came from Druridge.
