The heaviest rainbow trout of the week caught on the local stillwaters was landed at Witton Castle Lakes by local angler George Oliver weighing in at 17lb.

Sport has been excellent again this week despite the cold strong winds and frost.

Chris Smith from Bishop Auckland landed trout of 11lb 4oz, 5lb 4oz and 3lb for his limit bag, while John Barber took a fine fish of 10lb 4oz on a Black and Green Tadpole.

Mark French from Stanley caught a 12lb 4oz rainbow and John Bainbridge landed one of 10lb on a Cat.

John Green from Crook won the Bishop Auckland Angling Club's Bailiff's competition held at the weekend with a cracking 12lb rainbow that took a Black Zonker.

N SALMON anglers can still fish on the River Till up to and including November 30, and anglers are reminded that the fishing is by fly only.

Among the contacts offering fishing are Ford and Etal Estates on (01668) 216 228; Fenton Estates, (01668) 216 216; and Tiptoe Farm on (01890) 882 177.

N AMONG the catches this week was Frank Lightfoot of Fenham, who returned a 7lb salmon caught on a Cascade on the Glen, a tributary of the River Till.

The Glen had a foot of water on Saturday and this may have brought runs of autumn salmon into the main river.

Tony Thompson from South Shields landed a 4lb 8oz grilse on Tyneside Anglers Syndicate waters on a Pot Bellied Pig-style Ally's Shrimp, while David Carrick, of Ryton, returned a salmon of 5lb 4oz and a grilse of 4lb on size 8 Orange Shrimp fly pattern. Some fine grayling in the 1lb 8oz to 2lb 12oz size range have been caught on salmon flies.

N WITH salmon fishing coming to a close at the end of this month on the River Tweed and its tributaries, the game angler's attention will turn to grayling.

Anglers have the choice to fish the Tweed and its tributaries Till and Teviot as well as rivers such as the Eden in Cumbria and several Yorkshire river systems. Watch this column next week for some grayling fishing contact numbers.

N A REMINDER to coarse anglers that Derwent Reservoir is remaining open until December 17 and roach are now on the menu there.

For the pike enthusiast, Scaling Dam near Whitby and Sweethope Loughs offer the chance of some quality pike.
