Sea angling

It was a case of lucky 13 for junior Dan Craig in the Whitby Festival. He became the youngest ever winner of the event with a ling of 14lb 8oz from Paul Ebdon's boat Trot On on the 13th day, taking the £1000 first prize.

Poor weather claimed quite a few days and warm weather caused algal bloom, colouring the water close inshore forcing boats to the wrecks and hard ground 20 miles off.

With settled conditions for the last part of the festival, catches improved with double- figure cod and ling.

Since the festival with the water clearing, anglers aboard Sea Spray, Sea Otter and Trot On have averaged around 12 fish each to up-tide tactics, crab bait taking the most fish.

Shore anglers near Whitby have taken some good catches with Glen Kirkpatrick taking five cod for 16lb from Robin Hood's Bay after dark.

Flounders from the region's rivers have made up the bulk of catches for both pleasure and match anglers, but getting a sizeable fish through the millions of small codling, whiting and coalfish is hard work.

July 1-14th: Whitby Charter Skippers Association Summer Festival. £1000 for heaviest fish plus daily prizes, Contact Whitby skippers for more details.
