The Durham beaches and piers have once again given the best catches with a few codling to over 6lb, with the lucky anglers taking two or three a session.

Down at Hartlepool very few cod above 4lb have been taken, the rock edge and low water marks have seen the better catches with the North Gare, Staincliffe, promenade marks, and Parton beach all producing cod around the 1lb to 2lb mark.

However, most anglers have not bothered fishing the open shore and have been fishing the Rivers where the Wear and the Tyne have both produced reasonable catches of codling and coalfish with some touching nearly 2lb.

Unfortunately, most have been undersized but give great sport on light tackle and will always give match anglers fishing measure and release matches something to weigh in.

Some decent bass to 4lb have started to turn up around Hendon and the sandy beaches North of the Tyne.

Anglers will now be thinking of starting to travel for a bit of sport, as yet I have heard of no significant catches from the West Coast of Scotland, but those who like flounder fishing Port Carlisle have produced very good catches of fish to 1-12-0.

If you are still after cod then North Berwick is the place to head with fish to 8lb being taken.

Boat fishing has yet to take off with only a few reasonable catches reported with cod to 4lb from inshore marks.

I am still getting reports of commercial boats taking mackerel not far off the Tyne. It seems as if they are getting earlier and earlier each year and I am wondering when the first shore caught reports will come in.

It seems as if the shoals of pipefish which plagued the coast last year, are still around so fish will have plenty to feed on, so the juiciest baits, such as mussel, big black lugworm and fresh crab, will be needed to attract the fish.
