Some magnificent monster rainbows had reels screaming and anglers in good cheer at local stillwater trout fisheries this week.
Witton Castle Lakes produced a record rainbow of 21lb, caught by Stanley angler Alan Kitto on an Olive Nomad.
Sunderland rod Barry Pounder bagged one of 16lb 8oz on a Dawson's Olive.
At Jubilee Trout Lakes near Redworth, another beauty of 20lb 2oz was landed by John Wilden from Middlesbrough on an Orange Montana.
Andrew Raw from Shildon caught a stonking 18lb 7oz rainbow on a Cats Whisker, while Ryan Barron from Coxhoe bagged a beauty of 16lb 10oz on a Black Zonker.
Salmon movements are still disappointingly sparse for the time of year on the Tyne system, with few fish running through the fish pass at Riding Mill.
Good water levels raised anglers' hopes but the runs have so far not lived up to expectations. Some sea-trout have entered the Tyne and one huge fish was seen running through at Riding Mill. Coquet and Wear both had freshets that should get fish moving and some sport at last.
On the catch scene, John Friar from Derby landed a 13lb salmon on the Bywell beat, and the third fish of the season was taken on the Chesters Beat on the Lower North Tyne, estimated at 15lb.
Out on Tyneside Anglers' Syndicate beats on the Till, Owen Purvis from Middleton-on-Row caught a superb 14lb 8oz salmon and a sea-trout of just over 2lb.
