‘COME and have a go.’ That’s the message to trout anglers from officials at Northumbrian Water’s Derwent Reservoir as there were several 20lb-plus rainbows stocked into the popular County Durham fishery this week.
Having already broken one record by stocking 40,000 trout into Derwent this season, anglers now have a chance to get their names into the record books by catching one of these jumbo trout.
The present Derwent rainbow trout record stands at 19lb-plus which has stood for six years but this is likely to change this season.
The fishery has been in fine form this season and to date 6,846 visits have produced an impressive 22,832 trout.
Sport on local rivers has picked up and on the Coquet six salmon were grassed at Felton as well as five sea-trout. An 8lb salmon was landed at Pauperhaugh and two grilse at Ladies Bridge, Rothbury.
Amble rod David Redhead landed a cracking 4lb 8oz brown trout on worm. Lee Final caught a 3lb sea-trout on fly, and Trevor Dodds landed an 8lb salmon at Pauperhaugh on a Flying C.
ON NERAC waters on the Tyne Ian Gardner from High Heaton landed a 10lb salmon on fly at Gooseholme, while Peter Bellamy caught an 8lb sea-trout and Peter Marshall landed a 12lb salmon which he returned.
George Whitfield from Normanby caught a 7lb grilse at Haydon Bridge on fly, while Ryton rod Gary Cruikshank landed a 17lb salmon and a 9lb sea-trout on spinner.
FISHING Tyneside Anglers Syndicate waters Derek Purves from Whitby landed two sea-trout of 3lb 8oz and a salmon of 9lb 4oz, while Frank Lightfoot from Fenham landed a 6lb 8oz sea-trout on a Cascade. Tony Robinson caught a 3lb 8oz and a 4lb sea-trout, while Jack Coyle from Birtley took one of 2lb 8oz. Alan Auton from South Shields caught four sea-trout – all in the 2lb class – off the Border Esk and Lyne in Cumbria.
THE Tyne and Wear Fly Fishing Association eliminator was fished at Kielder last week and the 22 rods taking part caught 126 at an average of 5.7 fish per angler. Andrew Scott from Weardale was top rod with eight fish for 14lb 6oz, with Paul Tweddle second with eight fish for 13lb 6oz. In third place was Phil Green from Consett with 12lb 6oz.

SIMON Robinson of Whickham recently captained the England Rivers Team on the River Liffey in Co Kildare, Ireland. Simon’s team came second to Scotland while he was seventh overall and England’s top rod.
