Hungry trout in plentiful supply

IT was another good week at Blackton Reservoir as the trout continue to gorge themselves for the lean months ahead.

Mike Kennedy was again on good form, taking eight for 17lb, including rainbows of 3lb and 4lb. J Styles also had a limit bag including pristine blues of 3lb 8oz and 4lb.

Some superb fish have been taken at Grassholme this week, with J Chester including a cracking rainbow of 5lb in his 22lb bag. Veteran angler Morgan Lynch, fishing from his wheelchair, also had a good day recording an eight-fish limit bag including rainbows of up to 4lb and a fin-perfect blue.

Several fish in the 4lb to 7lb range have been brought to the net at Derwent Reservoir with K Armstrong, fishing Powerbait at Pow Hill, landing five for 18lb, including a well-conditioned rainbow of 7lb.

On Sunday, the Hirst Park Trout Ticklers from Ashington and Ashington Fly-Fishers held club events at the reservoir. If the clubs had been competing against each other, the Ticklers would have won with 15 rods taking 42 fish for 88lb 10oz. Eight-year-old Andrew Whitehall had the heaviest bag at 15lb 4oz and Lee Whitehall, nine, had the heaviest fish at 4lb.

G Henderson had a good start to the week at Fontburn, landing an eight-fish limit bag for 27lb 8oz. And regular fly angler J Brennard, from Cramlington, fishing Black and Orange Blobs, had three for more than 10lb.

The heaviest fish at Kielder this week was a sine rainbow of 5lb that was brought to the net by F Coxford. Ian Gowling, fishing at Tower Knowe, had good rainbows of 3lb and 4lb 8oz and Dave Milburn, fishing worm at Hawkhope Slipway, had seven for 16lb 8oz.

The large shoal reported at the east end of Scaling Dam is still in residence with fish rising freely on calm days. The best rainbow of the week at 7lb 8oz was off the east end of the dam wall by M Pattison of Middlesbrough. Another Middlesbrough angler G Hood had a rainbow of 6lb.
