Game Angling: Chatton providing plenty of chances

Sport continues to be excellent at Chatton Lakes with a good number of fish, including many in double figures, brought to the net

Sport continues to be excellent at Chatton Lakes with a good number of fish, including many in double figures, brought to the net.

Jim Tuck from Ashington landed 18, returning a 15lb rainbow to Chatton Lake. Mick Yeomans from Coldstream had a couple of visits to the fishery this week. On his first, he caught 10, returning a beautiful 12lb blue to Chatton Lake and, on his second, he landed nine, returning an 18lb rainbow.

On his first visit to the fishery Ryan Coldwell, aged 15, from Durham landed his first-ever double-figure fish – a 14lb 3oz rainbow on Chatton Lake; Gary Scott from Amble caught six, returning a 12lb brown to Ross Lake; and Peter Forster from Newcastle caught eight, landing three at 6lb and one at 7lb.

The Chatton heat of the Fritz n Flies Festive Competition Heat takes place on Saturday, November 23. Anyone wishing to enter should call the fishery on 01668 215226.

The fishery will be closing at 4.30pm this week.

Will Stobbo from Newcastle was one of many anglers to catch an eight-fish limit at Derwent Reservoir, with his catch weighing in at 19lb 12oz, including one of 4lb 8oz. Harry Tait also had a good day, catching two rainbows at 4lb each and Malcolm Ellis from Fir Tree landed a 20lb limit bag, with the heaviest of his fish also weighing 4lb.

South Linden’s Big Fish Week got off to a slow start due to recent rains and wind, but Andrew Forster landed and returned a nice 12lb rainbow. Good numbers of double-figure fish up to 20lb have been added to the fly lake for this event.

The bait lake has also been well stocked, with fish up to the 5lb to 6lb range.

Evening sessions at the fishery have ended, but a two-hour ticket for the fly lake is still available.

Heavy rain has seen Kielder Water rise by over one meter in less than six days. This has in turn seen fish move into shallower water to pick off worms and insects on the freshly flooded areas.

Paul Robson from Hexham managed to take his catch limit for 14lb, despite high onshore winds at Hawkhope slipway.

Best fish of the week at Witton Castle Lakes included a 9lb 8oz rainbow caught by R Golden and a 6lb 8oz blue landed by B Plumber. Best bags included 10 for B Talbot and nine for N Crookshank (correct as in email), with several anglers on Thursday catching four-plus fish for the day.
