Coarse angling: Big haul of roach is Grab-bed at Whittle

David Hall brings you the latest coarse angling news from around the region including the latest action at Whittle Dene complex

Only three catches signed out from the Whittle Dene complex this week, so Northumbrian Water are reminding anglers they must leave a return after fishing.

W Grabham grabbed a 6 lb 8 oz haul of roach.

Steve Firth took a 3 lb 5 oz catch of roach, with the lower reservoir fishing best where all banks are offering good sport.

It’s been a good steady week on Aldin Grange, with plenty of fish showing.

Carp went a little quiet during the winds and heavy rain but started to recover as the week went on and on the Match Lake lots of smaller carp and big ide have made the weights.

Silver Lake has yielded skimmers and ide to 2 lb 8 oz and on Blackbird Lake Mark Collins fished the banjo feeder with 6mm pellet to bag 40 lb plus carp in only two hours’ fishing.

On The Angel Complex, silver fish are getting ready for spawning and have been caught in great numbers.

Bream to 6 lb 4 oz, tench to 3 lb 5 oz, Ide over 3 lb 4 oz and skimmers at 2 lb have all featured, as well as rudd over 1 lb 5 oz, double-figured carp and a 2 lb 10 oz perch with monster gudgeon too.

It is with great sadness this column has to report the death of regular Leazes Park carp angler John Fenwick.

He passed away last month after being diagnosed with a brain tumour. He was 55.

Fenwick fished Leazes for many years and will be sadly missed by those who knew him.

The second match in the Whittle Dene Spring League fished on the Lower Reservoir on Sunday was won by John Parkinson with 6 lb 10 oz.

Martin Robson was runner-up with 5 lb 14 oz and Nick Jose third on 5 lb 11 oz with Steve Jaques fourth with 4 lb.

Martin Robson tops the league with 28 points, Nick Jose second with 26 and Steve Woods third with 25.

John Foster, with a creditable 64 lb 11 oz, took first place on Sunday’s Open on Lookout Lake with Graham Skirrey second on 52 lb 6 oz and John Nelson third with 45 lb 15 oz

This week’s match on Bowes Lake went to Alan McGuire with 40 lb 2 oz ahead of Jonny Trainor on 37 lb 2 oz and Colin Pine with 34 lb 6 oz .

The popularity of Bowes Lake as a match water is shown in the fact there will be a Bowes League starting soon there.
