Gateshead Thunder are awaiting the outcome of the brawl at the end of yesterday’s 28-20 defeat to University of Gloucestershire All Golds.
Referee Adam kemp has placed on report the full incident which unfolded after Thunder player Matty Beharrell was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle on Gloucester’s Danny Thomas in the final minute of the Kingstone Press Championship One encounter.
The Hull Kingston Rovers player had earlier scored a try for his side in a competitive game which saw the teams level 16-16 at the midway stage – but his sending-off triggered players from both teams into a scuffle which will now be raked over by the game’s governing body.
Gateshead had got themselves off to the ideal start when Chris Heil’s try after just seven minutes put them on their way to what they hoped would be back-to-back home victories, having beaten Oxford on the season’s opening day.
Tries for Thomas and Cockburn had the hosts 12-4 down as Gloucester found their form, Beharrell and Carl Booth hitting back for Gateshead to nose ahead in a see-saw encounter.
Thomas’ second try ensured parity at the interval, Thunder starting the second half the way they had the first when Heil crossed for his second try.
Barlow and Elliott had the decisive say as their pair of tries ensured Gloucester finished in front, Beharrell’s dismissal and the ensuing scrap ending the day on a downer as they now await further news.
