Sunderland have missed out on another attacking target with Eduardo Vargas on the verge of joining QPR.

The Black Cats had been interested in taking the 24-year-old Chile forward on a season-long loan from Napoli, but he is set to complete an £8m move to the newly-promoted club.

Gustavo Poyet is keen to add another forward to his squad but his main target Fabio Borini has been frustratingly elusive.

Sunderland had a £14m offer accepted by Liverpool last month but have been unable to push through a deal for the Italian, who was their top-scorer on loan last season.

It has forced them to consider alternatives in case Poyet’s public optimism about sporting director Lee Congerton completing the signing proves unfounded.

The collapse of Liverpool’s proposed move for Loic Remy and an injury picked up by Borini in pre-season have complicated matters.

Sunderland have other options in wide areas as Will Buckley and Emanuele Giaccherini could both partner Adam Johnson there.

Buckley has been brought to add to competition for places, while Giaccherini is yet to convince as a Premier League wingerand is clearly better suited to a more central role.

The Italy international has a groin injury and is unlikely to make his first appearance of the season until after the international matches in the first week of September.

Connor Wickham was used on the left of a front three at the Hawthorns on the opening day of the season, but the England Under-21 international’s future at the Stadium of Light is still to be decided.

The Black Cats appear to have seen off West Ham United’s attempts to sign the 21-year-old, but Poyet threatened to sell Wickham if he did not extend his deal this month.

It expires at the end of this campaign and after his excellent finish to the last one, scoring five goals in the final six matches, the Wearsiders are anxious to agree another.

They lost Phil Bardsley and Jack Colback on Bosman free transfers this summer and are keen to ensure the same thing does not happen to Wickham, the most expensive teenager in their history after his £8.2m move from Ipswich Town in 2011.

They are unwilling to meet his wage demands, however.

Bruno Zuculini has joined Valencia on a season-long loan. Sunderland called off their pursuit the Manchester City midfielder, signed this summer, earlier this month.

Another player they have been linked with, defender Geoff Cameron, has reportedly handed in a transfer request at Stoke City.

The 29-year-old USA international was not involved in Stoke’s opening-day game against Aston Villa and is unhappy at playing at right-back, but Schalke, Hull City and Southampton are also reported to be interested.

Meanwhile, the Black Cats have sold their allocation of tickets for the August 30 game at QPR.
