STEVEN Taylor’s competitive comeback lasted an hour as Newcastle Reserves were defeated by Wigan yesterday.

The central defender was on the bench for the first team against Sunderland, but yesterday was his first appearance since injuring his shoulder in pre-season against Carlisle. Taylor played alongside Matthew Grieve in the back four before being replaced by Dan Leadbitter, himself back after long-term injury. Wigan took the lead after half-an-hour through Joe Holt, following a surging run from Callum McManaman. The Latics doubled their lead two minutes later, Daniel Redmond scoring from the spot after being fouled by James Tavernier.

United pulled one back on 72 minutes, Patrick McLaughlin netting the rebound after Haris Vuckic’s shot was parried.

NEWCASTLE: Soderberg, Tavernier, Dummett, Taylor, Grieve, Donaldson, Richardson, Edmundsson, Vuckic, Airey, Ferguson.
