NEWCASTLE Reserves slipped to an undeserved defeat at Wigan despite Nile Ranger’s first-half screamer.

The visitors, including goalkeeper Steve Harper, saw a Mark Doninger goal chalked off for offside before Ranger volleyed home on 25 minutes.

Geordie striker Ryan Donaldson had a great chance to extend the lead five minutes before the break but fired over.

It was Donaldson’s last involvement of the evening as he was stretchered from the field with an ankle injury.

A lapse in concentration at the back allowed the Latics to draw level just before half-time, before scoring the winner nine minutes after the break.

NUFC: Steve Harper, Callum Morris, Stephen Folan, David Edgar, Ben Tozer, Mark Doninger, James Marwood, Jonny Godsmark, Sammy Ameobi (Conor Newton, 46m) Ryan Donaldson (Michael McCrudden, 45m) Nile Ranger Subs (Not Used): Max Johnson, James Tavernier, Patrick McLaughlin
