NILE Ranger took his Academy goals tally to seven with a hat-trick to sink Barnsley.

The ex-Southampton striker led the Tykes’ defence a merry dance, helped by Sam Ameobi, younger brother of Shola. Ranger, 17, volleyed inside the left post from a tight angle after 29 minutes and two minutes later was tripped by Shaun Reid in the area. He scored from the spot.

Andreas Arestidou, United’s stand-in keeper from Blackburn, saved twice from Reuben Lazerus. Ameobi shot just wide and almost set up Ranger for a hat-trick.

Arestidou saved from Danny Fearbeough on 69 minutes and within two minutes Ranger completed his hat-trick, converting Phil Airey’s right-wing cross. Ranger could have had a fourth when he ran 50 yards only to be denied by the keeper. With seven minutes left Scargill scored for the visitors.

United coach Kenny Wharton said: “Nile Ranger was the difference and so was Sami Ameobi. Brad (Inman) and Greg (McDermott) were excellent in midfield.’’

NEWCASTLE UNITED UNDER-18s: Arestidou, Tavernier (sub Airey 68), Lough (sub Folan 74), Inman, Morris, Henderson, Newton, McDermott, Ranger, Ameobi, McCrudden (sub Spear 73). Subs (not used) Leadbitter, Williams.
