NEWCASTLE made it eight FA Premier Academy games unbeaten, but they were made to work hard by visitors Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls raced into a sixth-minute lead with a stunning goal from midfielder Jack Poulton whose 25-yard strike flew into the top corner.

Newcastle grew into the game and applied late pressure as the first half came to a close, Marcus Maddison hitting a shot just wide of the target. Shaun Cuff then clawed away an ambitious Aron Spear effort at the expense of a corner, the Wednesday keeper’s first save of the game.

The Yorkshiremen started the second half brightly, but United levelled on 56 minutes when Ryan McGorrigan took Maddison’s pass to find the net from just inside the box.

Five minutes later the Magpies scored the winner when Spear forced the ball home.
