NEWCASTLE United’s long FA Premier Academy unbeaten run came to end as the ten-man Magpies were beaten by visitors Liverpool.

United were already behind when midfield man Aaron Spear was sent off early in the second half for a rash challenge, Joe Joyce’s side then levelling before the visitors claimed victory 15 minutes from time.

Jak Alnwick saved from Toni Silva, midfielder Krisztian Adorjan shot wide of the far post and Remi Streete’s timely block denied Raheem Sterling as Liverpool gave a signal of intent.

United’s Marcus Maddison, set up by Ben Sayer, had a shot tipped over by Jamie Stephens while Silva headed over from close range at the other end.

Krisztian Adorjan hit the post with Alnwick beaten but it was only a stay of execution as Bradley Smith burst into the box to set up a simple opener for Adam Morgan.

Stephens saved from Spear who then picked up a second yellow for a challenge on Silva in midfield to leave United with a mountain to climb in the final half-hour.

Undeterred, captain N’zuzi equalised in the 64th minute when he side footed past Stephens after Alex Nicholson’s long ball had been picked up by Ryan McGorrigan.

Liverpool, however, claimed victory when substitute Michael Ngoo shot across Alnwick and into the far corner, Sterling almost adding a third.

NEWCASTLE UNITED UNDER-18s: Alnwick, Nicholson, Riley, Sayer, Storey, Streete, McGorrigan (Knight 82), Nzuzi, D.Taylor, Spear, Maddison. Subs (not used): Robinson (gk), Ions, Mogwo, Hoganson
