RYAN Taylor was handed the captain’s armband on his comeback as Newcastle United Reserves defeated Bedlington Terriers 2-0 at Whitley Park last night.

Bedlington’s best opportunities fell to Stephen Baptist and Alex Benjamin but neither troubled goalkeeper Oli Soderberg.

Newcastle’s breakthrough finally came on 73 minutes when Joan Edmundsson finished off a good move from close range. Terriers strove to get back on level terms but were caught on the break with four Newcastle players against a solitary Bedlington defender.

Substitute Dennis Knight fired past Kevin Morton to just about put the tie beyond Terriers.

Taylor played the full 90 minutes and United’s only substitute was goal-scorer Knight for Andy Mogwo.
