COACH Willie Donachie was disappointed to see his Newcastle side suffer their first away defeat for seven months.
In a disappointing and largely uneventful game on Merseyside, United created very little and conceded the only goal of the game early in the second half.
The Magpies rarely threatened the home goal, though midfielder Conor Newton went close to salvaging a point late on.
Donachie said: “The players worked hard but were unable to create clear-cut openings. We seemed to lack energy and maybe the players are suffering from playing a lot of games recently.”
