Summer sunshine gave way to torrential rain just moments before kick-off at Brunton Park, but that did little to dampen the spirits as Carlisle United set off in determined mood against their illustrious Championship visitors.

An early Tom Eaves effort suggested that Bolton were in town to do the business, but it quickly became all about the home side as the mobile front line of Guy, Miller and Amoo caused all kinds of problems.

And the Cumbrian endeavour was made to pay when summer signing David Amoo left his man for dead on the way to the byline. His cross caused all kinds of problems and Lee Miller kept his eye on the prize before drilling it underneath the scampering Andy Lonergan.

Carlisle controlled much of the remainder of the first half, with Miller and Amoo a constant thorn in the Bolton side, and it was left to set-pieces from Chris Eagles and Robbie Hall to remind the Blues they had a game on their hands.

The pattern of the second half mirrored the first as Bolton started brightly before United settled into their stride.

The talking point throughout the 45 minutes was the rain which threatened to turn an entertaining affair into a farce. Lee Miller somehow weathered the storm to keep the flow of chances coming and his late run to meet a Robson pass needed a sliding block from Lonergan.

But the weather eventually won the day as patchy surface water and driving rain turned the contest into typical pre-season fayre as the combatants settled with what they had.

“This was a much better performance,” said Carlisle boss Greg Abbott.

“There were some good individual performances, but the important thing was that we played well as a team.

“It became more about the conditions once the heavy rain set in, but we enjoyed it and it was good to see us approach the game properly across every area of the pitch.”
