NEWCASTLE Benfield couldn’t prevent West Auckland Town from taking over at the top of the STL Northern League First Division when the sides met at the Sam Smiths ground last night.

The visitors went ahead on 28 minutes when Michael Rae made a good run down the flank.

He crossed to the far post where former Benfield player John Campbell fired past goalkeeper Shaun Backhouse to open the scoring.

West doubled the lead in the 71st minute as Adam Nichols crossed and Rae headed in but soon afterwards Benfield were back in the game.

A well-directed free-kick from Brian Dodsworth was headed on by Kenny Boyle to Jordan Lartey who had a simple task from two yards.

Benfield pushed forward searching for an equaliser but left the way open for Elliott Gardner to score West’s third goal three minutes from time.

In Division Two, West Allotment Celtic just eased past Hebburn Town who were first to score through Jeff Forsyth on 52 minutes.

Liam McIver levelled two minutes later and in the 57th minute Forsyth was sent off. Celtic took advantage and clinched the points with a winner from Shaun Reid.
