SUNDERLAND had to make do with a point after blowing a 3-1 lead against Liverpool the Academy of Light.
The visitors opened the scoring midway through the first half.
Jesus Fernandez Saenz's run down the left caused concern and when his low shot from distance came back off the post John Flanagan reacted first to smash the ball first time past Lewis King.
Sunderland were level just two minutes later via the penalty spot. Adam Reed sent the goalkeeper the wrong way after Jack Robinson floored Craig Lynch.
Nathan Eccleston almost restored Liverpool's lead from close-range, but it would be Sunderland who would find the net again.
Lynch gained possession 25 yards from goal and fired in a blistering shot to leave Reds goalkeeper Tyrell Belford helpless.
A fine first half was capped ten minutes before the break when Roarie Deacon's free-kick was deflected in by Liverpool’s Andre Wisdom.
Liverpool pulled a goal back early in the second half thanks to Conor Coady's close-range header from Krisztian Adorjan's corner.
Sunderland goalkeeper King made two fine saves as the visitors pressed, diving to block Adorjan's drive before tipping away an Eccleston free-kick.
However, he was beaten 18 minutes from time as Adorjan looped over a delivery which caught the wind and sailed over the pack of players into the far corner.
Eccleston then shot wide in a frenetic finish which also saw Fernandez Saenz hit the bar as Sunderland held out for a point.
