GATESHEAD lost for the first time since New Year’s Day when they went out of the UniBond League Challenge Cup at the semi-final stage on penalties.
Skelmersdale United, challenging to join Gateshead in the Premier Division next season, went ahead after five minutes with Chris Almond beating goalkeeper Paul Musselwhite.
Ian Bogie’s side deservedly equalised after 65 minutes as Graeme Armstrong headed home a David Southern cross.
The game went into extra-time and the Tynesiders went ahead, substitute Jamie Harwood turning in another cross by Southern.
Skelmersdale equalised when George Donnelly converted a penalty. But he was sent off following an incident with James Curtis.
The home side’s keeper Ryan McMahon starred in the shoot-out.
